Jessie Degollado
CECLEF Aguila Lifetime Achievement Award
Jessie Degollado has been a recognizable face on San Antonio television news since 1984. She began at KSAT 12 NEWS as a neighborhood reporter, and is now part of its “Know My Neighborhood” segment which features a different neighborhood every month. Not only does she look back at the history of each neighborhood, she also does stories for KSAT’s “History Untold” segment.
Much of her long career has been as a general assignments reporter covering a wide range of stories and spot news. For many years, Jessie used her bilingual skills to cover news along the South Texas border where she grew up.
Having lived in the Rio Grande Valley, she would often cover the struggles of farmworkers and the emergence of the United Farmworkers demanding fair wages and safer working conditions. Among her first interviews after coming to San Antonio, was with Jaime Martinez, the founder of the Cesar E. Chavez Legacy and Educational Foundation. Later, he who would often call her with story ideas. After his passing, Jessie spoke with his son Ernest about how he would carry on his father’s “Si Se Puede” legacy.
Jessie has said she believes it’s important that more people know and appreciate the work of those harvesting the food they eat.
